Making the transition from a sales background turned print shop apprentice to shop manager has been an journey to say the least a ton of mistakes have been made along the way. When trying to islolate common mistakes for the purpose of helping others, whether you are a DIY type of person that wants to print for a hobby or someone looking to start a business we all will make the same mistakes.
If you are an apprentice for someone which is usually how you start off, I mean lets face it whether its a T-shirt, hoodie, jacket or whatever they all cost money. For someone starting off you would be under a tremendous amount of pressure to perform if someone is paying you to make mistakes and cost them even more money. So Mistake number 1 is.......
APPRENTICE FIRST!
The learning curve sucks, again whether your a DIY type hobbyist or someone thinking that Custom Screen Printing could be a Viable business for you. APPRENTICE FIRST. There is good money to be made printing custom tees and retailing them or just producing t-shirts and other apparel for individuals and companies, but its hard work and mistakes Cost money.... Its for this reason that gaining an apprenticeship is not only the smart thing to do but its easier than getting a regular job. As an apprentice you are FREE LABOR, your pay is knowledge and its for this reason that a reputable print shop would love to take on an Apprentice. If an apprentice was to ruin a several shirts throughout the course of a week it may only cost the shop a few bucks if you are horrible at it you may cost them a hundred or so, which is a lot easier for a business owner to stomach if they aren't also paying you 10 bucks plus an hour.
